Common Admission Test (CAT) is the premier all India competitive management entrance exam conducted at national level by IIMs for admission to Postgraduate Business Administration Programme and other programs in various IITs, IIMs, NITs and other private management institutions accepting CAT. The CAT score is used separately by each institute along with other parameters i.e. academic performance, work experience, group discussion, written assessment and interview performance etc. to select candidates. The weightage assigned to CAT score may differ for each institute.

CAT 2016 was convened by IIM Bangalore, one of the top IIMs. Professor Rajendra K Bandi, Decision Sciences and Information Systems; Chairperson Admissions & Financial Aid, was the convener of CAT 2016.

CAT Online Test Series

CAT 2016 Syllabus

CAT does not have any predefined syllabus. It has to be noted that the CAT does not predefine any specific chapters or content upon which questions can occur. However, any intricate term would be well defined, if the problem requires such knowledge.

CAT Entrance Exam, will have 3 Sections as below:

  • Quantitative Ability (QA)
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VRC)

Quantitative Ability


The Quantitative Aptitude section comprises of fundamental mathematics, based on 10 + 2 difficulty level.

Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability, Number System, Permutation & Combination, Speed, Time and Distance, Profit and Loss, Logarithmic Equations, HCF and LCM, Ratio, Quadratic and Linear Equations, Algebra, Mensuration, Percentages, progressions, Complex Numbers, Simple and Compound Interest etc.

Data Interpretation

Tables, Graphical Representations, Charts and any diagrammatical Representation

Logical Reasoning

Logical Games, Calendars, Cubes, Clocks, Blood Relations, Seating Arrangements etc.

Verbal Ability

Critical Reasoning, Paragraph Forming, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension 


CAT 2016 Pattern

There is no fixed pattern for exam. The exam pattern keeps changing every year. However, significant changes were announced for CAT 2015.

Exam pattern of CAT 2015 is given below for reference.

Significant changes in CAT 2015: 

  • QA & VRC will have 34 questions each and DILR will have 32 questions.
  • No swithcing to other sections while answering questions in one section. Section will shift to next after candidate has spent 60 minutes on it.
  • Test duration has also been increased from 170 minutes to 180 minutes.

Registration Window for CAT 2016: From 8th August to 22nd September 2016

CAT 2016 Admit Card will be available from: 18th October 2016 onwards

Exam Date: 4th December 2016

Declaration of CAT Result with Scorecard:  Second week of January 2017
